Brian Dettmer – Beyond Books

Brian Dettmer‘s work is mesmerizing.  He cuts old non-fiction books into sculptures.  In an interview with CBS News he describes his process.  When I first discovered his work, I had assumed he had planned out every cut and image, since the sculptures work so tightly and fluidly, but apparently, he digs through the book like an archaeologist, searching for words and images that will work as he makes the pieces.  He has an idea of what could be there, but doesn’t know exactly what he will find.

These images are from older work.  His recent work (on his website) gets more and more complex.  Enjoy!
